Dan Wheldon was a highly successful British racing driver who competed primarily in the IndyCar Series. Born on June 22, 1978, he tragically died on October 16, 2011, in a multi-car accident at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Wheldon achieved significant accomplishments during his career. He won the prestigious Indianapolis%20500 twice, in 2005 and 2011. His 2005 victory was particularly memorable as he led the final laps after teammate Tony Kanaan crashed. In 2011, he won in dramatic fashion, taking the lead on the final lap after J.R. Hildebrand crashed.
In 2005, Wheldon also won the IndyCar%20Series%20championship, becoming the first British driver to do so since Nigel Mansell in 1993. He was known for his oval racing prowess and his aggressive yet calculated driving style.
Prior to IndyCar, Wheldon raced in various junior formulas, including British Formula Ford and Formula Vauxhall. He moved to the United States to pursue his racing career, competing in the Barber Dodge Pro Series and the Atlantic Championship before making his IndyCar debut in 2002.
Wheldon was actively involved in the development of the new DW12%20IndyCar chassis, which was slated to debut in 2012.
